Saturday & Sunday
As a prelude to the golden years of retirement, David Whittaker
decided that growing a few grapes might keep him busy... and has it
ever! Since 1994, those grapes have been growing and growing and
growing. In 2000, Unicorn Winery officially made the transition
from vineyard to winery.
Named for a 1968 song by the Irish Rovers about the mystical
animal, Unicorn Winery has created a new breed of wines by
growing French and American hybrids. Their wines include Slightly
Embarassed (a blush), Viognier, Meritage, Chardonnay, Chambourcin
and Merlot. The vineyard is year-round work... pruning
from November to April, planting new vines in May and June, and
of course, harvesting those wonderful grapes from August to
October.
Unicorn Winery is a great stop for more than just wine... the winery
has a fabulous deck overlooking a koi pond, picnic tables, and the
Rappahannock River is a short stroll away. Enjoy a family picnic,
tours upon request, wine tastings and a great gift shop!
